Special Clinical Training

  • As a part of training in psychiatry in India, I have received training and supervision in Cognitive-Behavior Therapy and Behavior Therapy for anxiety disorders, sexual dysfunction and depression in adults.

  • I have also received informal training and supervision in non-directive play therapy, behavior therapy and mutual story building technique for children.

  • I am a fully qualified hypno-therapist, trained to work with all age groups.

  • With European academy for EMDR, I have completed level one training in EMDR ( eye movement desensitization and reprocessing) in adults and children. I am trained to work with adults and children suffering from long term and short term effects of stress and trauma. This therapy was developed with Vietnam war veterans in USA. It helps people overcome psychological consequences like Post-traumatic stress disorder after severe traumatic events.

  • In UK I have received supervision and training in systemic family therapy. This therapy modality deals with ingrained dysfunctional family patterns of communication and behavior that affect children's mental health.

Teaching Experience & Other Professional Activities

In UK : I have been a part of training team for mental health nurses, medical students, junior psychiatry colleagues and non professional members of the team. I have conducted class room lectures, clinical teaching sessions and specific skill transfer workshops for all these student groups.

Teaching in India : My work as a lecturer at Maharashtra Institute of Mental health, Pune and at Sassoon General Hospitals, Pune is recognized as teaching experience by University of Pune.

I taught junior trainees in psychiatry, clinical psychology students and students of psychiatric social work on the ward rounds and in classroom.

I also work as a consultant supervisor for counselors and special educators in schools.

General Practitioner Teaching: Along with Dr.Soumitra Pathare I have conducted 4 half-day training programs for general practitioners with specific aim of training to treat anxiety disorders, depression and sexual dysfunction in males in their clinical practice. This training program involved about 100 GPs practicing in urban and rural set-ups.

Tarang- a non-profit child guidance clinic ( November 2002 - July 2004 ): I worked as a play therapist and psychiatrist at "Tarang" (a child guidance clinic run by a non-government organization, "MASUM") . This center serves children from under-privileged sections of the society. I was involved in the training of 5 clinical psychologists in child related issues at this center. I was instrumental in development of child-guidance centers in 2 schools. We produced booklets about ADHD in children, study methods for parents, depression and Anxiety in adults in local language.

Catamorhosis- I work as executive coach with Dr.Soumitra Pathare and Mr. Prasad Shirgaonkar. We work with senior managers in the industry as personal coach and performance enhancers. ( www.catamorphosis.in )

Work for prevention of child abuse

In 2003 and 2004 I conducted workshops for teachers and parents of over 1500 children in various schools and institutions. These workshops were aimed at improving dialog between parents and children to prevent and detect child abuse. Through the teachers I trained the children to identify abusers and to protect themselves.

In 2002 I worked in relief camps set up for victims of communal violence in the state of Gujarat. I conducted psychodrama and story telling groups for the affected children in these camps.

Non-Professional Publications

I have written various articles in local language magazines about- male emotionality, relationship dynamics in nuclear extended families, effective parenting, hyperactive children, and Sexuality of mentally retarded children.

Working with play-writers and movie scriptwriters is a hobby that I have developed as an outgrowth of my clinical work in India. I work with a few writer friends to develop storyline with psychological issues. One of the plays "Remote Control" and one full length feature film "Chakwa" are commercially successful and have won awards.
